Aromatically this wine is a combo pack of red raspberry perserves and a touch of black licorice, cinnamon stick and just a hint of white pepper. On the palate it is lush, elegant and very Southern Rhône in style, in that it reminds me more of Grenache than Zinfandel.
Once in a while you find one particular barrel that stands out form the rest. in 2015 I had one 500-liter barrel of Cassata Zinfandel that did this for me. This wine is 100% Zinfandel. Normally we blend in the Petite Sirah from this vineyard during fermentation, but this year we decided to keep it separate until bottling. I am glad we did, as this one stands out for me. Such a pureness on both the aromatics and flavors of this wine, with sweet round texture on the palate.
