2016 Domaine des Chirats Rockpile Vineyard Syrah
2016 Domaine des Chirats Rockpile Vineyard Syrah

Chirats is an old French word for rocks. A deep purple /  red color with aromas as seductive as any Rockpile Syrah I have ever made. In fact, Yves Cuilleron, with whom I do this collaboration, feels this is the greatest Rockpile that we have made so far. From the blackberry / black cherry, roasted Herbs de Provence, freshly sharpen lead pencil and cedar notes to the mineral background that is the signature of Rockpile.  This is a full-bodied wine for sure, but with great tension, that delivers freshness and vibrancy to this elegant wine.  The palate is focused on black and red fruits, savory notes, floral and crush rocks.

Wine Profile
96+ Pts Jeb Dunnuck The 2016 Syrah Domaine Des Chirats is a more backward wine that just exudes a sense minerality and a liqueur of rocks like character. Deep purple-colored with an awesome nose of bloody blue fruits, ground pepper, graphite, and violets, it builds incrementally on the palate with full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, and an incredible sense of purity and precision. This isn't a blockbuster yet seems to have one foot in the Rhone Valley and one foot in Sonoma. It's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15+ years or more. 94 Pts Wine Spectator Powerfully built, with a vibrant backbone wrapped in rich and plump huckleberry, cracked pepper and garrigue accents that build tension toward broad-shouldered tannins. Drink now through 2025.—T.F. 92 Pts Wine Enthusiast In collaboration with French winemaker Yves Cuilleron, this is a substantial wine of great complexity and bold flavor. A juicy entry of black cherry and blackberry dig up underlying earthiness and aspects of lavender and lilac. It has big power within a soft frame. 90 Pts Conn Guide The latest edition of this joint offering from Jeff Cohn and noted Northern Rhône vintner Yves Cuilleron follows the now-accustomed course of being very ripe and comparatively tight in structure with grippy tannins to spare and slightly lifted acidity working to accentuate its youthful astringency. It is a wine in need of time, yet it comes up a tad short on fruity depth and concentration, and, even if fairly tough at the moment, it strikes us as a Syrah without quite the long aging trajectory of Mr. Cohn's top bottlings. That said, it is a very good wine and should reach its peak in a half-dozen or so years. Reviewed: March 2019 2015 - 96 Pts, 2014 - 95 Pts, 2013 - 97 Pts
Winemaker Notes
This is a project that I do with Yves Cuilleron, one of my favorite winemakers in the Northern Rhône. I met Yves in 1998 at Hospice du Rhône in Paso Robles. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with him on this, our fourth vintage of our Domaine des Chirats Rockpile Syrah. Domaine des Chirats is translated in old French to "Home of the pile of rocks". What a fitting name for a special wine!
