2016 So Serine Rockpile Vineyard Syrah
2016 So Serine Rockpile Vineyard Syrah

Black purple color mesmerizes you as you swirl it in the glass. Once again this small production block of Rockpile Syrah (Serine) continues to produce wines that are so rich, deep and mystifing. Aromatically this wine is like walking into a smoked meat locker loaded with sausages and other dried meats. A sensual experience taking you from Hermitage / Cote Rôtie aromas to a full-bodied, but elegant, textured wine loaded with savory black fruits, dark chocolates, roasted earth and lavender notes.

Tasting Notes
A very giving wine in every sense of the word, but one that will need time in the bottle or be decanted to really allow this wine to unfold its magic elixir. Jeff Cohn
98 Pts Jeb Dunnuck The 2016 Syrah So Serine comes from the Rockpile AVA and saw 40% stems and 18 months all in new oak. This inky colored effort offers a primordial bouquet of smoke blue fruits, ground pepper, lavender, and game. This is followed by a powerful wine that has a full-bodied, expansive mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a terrific sense of minerality on the finish. It's a powerful, backward, inky wine that needs 3-4 years of bottle age and will knock your socks off over the following decade.

Vineyard Notes
The Serine selection from this vineyard site is so Northern Rhone in what it offers in the final wine. Think of Hermitage in intensity, and Cote-Rotie in elegance. At 2010 ft. elevation Jeff says "Syrah at high elevations and rocky soils are a match made in heaven."
Winemaker Notes
Once again this selection of Syrah, which is known as Serine in the Northern Rhone has produced a wine that is a Menage a trois of aromas and flavors that one finds only in the elegance of Cote-Rotie, the intensity of Hermitage and the pure essence of site from Rockpile.

Other Notes
The bud wood originates from Les Grand Places vineyard in Cote-Rotie and was brought to our Rockpile vineyard via a suitcase. Serine is considered the oldest selection of Syrah in Cote-Rotie. Thus the name So Serine came to be! I always feel this to be one of our most complex wines.
