Tasting Notes
Deep saturated purple color and compelling aromas of cassis, blackberries, roasted earth and savory notes give way to a wine that is full bodied, but fresh and vibrant. Focused on black fruit and savory components of Charcuterie and black licorice that evolve into a long and complex finish.
96 Pts Jeb Dunnuck The 2016 Syrah Zio Tony Ranch comes from a cooler vineyard farmed by Martinelli and it saw 40% whole clusters and 18 months in 40% new French oak. It's another vivid purple-colored effort that boasts off the hook notes of blue fruits, lavender, ground pepper, and cured meats. Deep, rich, powerful, and opulent it has ample structure, an incredibly sweet earth and mineral character, hints of violets, and a great finish. This is one of the more opulent, flamboyant wines in the lineup, yet it has terrific minerality as well as flawless balance. 95 Pts Wine Enthusiast From a relatively cool-climate site, this wine is dark and inky with fistfuls of earthy forest floor, grilled meat and wild game. Sanguine, it tastes of iron and dried herb, grippy with undeniable underlying brightness and beautiful shocks of white pepper. 92 Pts Conn Guide Intensely varietal with as much or more of Syrah's peppery spice than any of its equally rich and extracted siblings, Cohn's Zio Tony bottling is a big, extraordinarily deep wine with a decidedly juicy turn to its relentless, impressively concentrated fruit. As is the case with its several mates, it is a Syrah that can be justly accused of extravagance, yet when as deep and wonderfully well-structured as it is, extravagance can hardly be seen as a vice. Fans of delicacy need not apply, but unrepentant lovers of sheer vinous richness are certain to swoon. Reviewed: March 2019 91+ Pts Wine Advocate Very deep, opaque purple-black in color, the 2016 Syrah Zio Tony Ranch opens with notes of tar and turned black soil, opening to baked black berry, cherry and blueberry with notes of smoked meat, fried herbs and olive. Full-bodied and jam-packed with dark ripe fruits and savory nuances, it has very firm, slightly chewy tannins and a long, savory finish.
Vineyard Notes
Planted in 2000, named after the Martinelli's Zio (Uncle) Tony who established the family's farming in the late 1800's originally planting potatoes on the current vineyard site. Goldridge soils, clay and loam produce a dusty earth component making the 470 Syrah clone a little richer, rounder, and more seductive. Trellised vines, organic farming.
