Jeff Cohn Cellars

2017 Rockpile Vineyard Syrah 'Haley'
2017 Rockpile Vineyard Syrah 'Haley'
Sustainably Farmed Flagship Vineyard - This wine is named after Jeff & Alexandra's daughter

A saturated earth red color that is reminiscent of the red soils up at 2000 ft elevation of Rockpile vineyard and a nose that’s all about place! Mineral, mineral, mineral - terroir at its essence. This is followed by a sweet cassis and black cherry, iron and a feeling that this wine is tightly wound and ready to explode from the glass.

The palate shows incredible richness, a tight structure, and then a sweetness that will not only mesmerize but will open your eyes to the magic that is Rockpile Vineyard.

This is a wine for the decanter or to drink 5-10 years from now.

Why This Wine?

Named for my youngest daughter, this wine comes from two different blocks. One produces the elegance and finesse and the other, the structure and depth of this wine. Together, they are the perfect balance. Intensely dark ruby red purple in color, it will stain the glass as you swirl it.

Aromas of black cherry, toasted brioche, white flowers, lavender, violets, savory notes of wild herbs and charcuterie. A mouth coating, classic Rockpile mineral structure and texture hits the front palate. Its focus on black cherry and hints of freshly crushed green and red peppercorns give way to a giving midpalate and long finish. A true reflection of my Haley’s personality.

Why This Wine?

It was important to me to make a special wine for my youngest daughter. She is an incredibly talented artist, incredibly smart, and loves adventure. She is also hardheaded and stubborn. She has a softer side and a harder side, so does this wine. One produces the elegance and finesse and the other, the structure and depth of this wine. Together, they are the perfect balance. Intensely dark ruby red purple in color, it will stain the glass as you swirl it. A true reflection of my Haley’s personality.

95 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - The 2017 Syrah Rockpile Vineyard is another huge success in the vintage. From a great site in the Rockpile AVA of Sonoma County, its deep purple color is followed by a great bouquet of blueberries, iron, crushed rocks, ground pepper, and hints of smoked game. Structured and tannic on the palate, it reminds me of a young Cornas and needs 4-5 years of bottle age. It’s seriously impressive, though, and should have 15 years of overall longevity. 93+ Pts Wine Advocate - Inky in the glass, the 2017 Syrah Haley Rockpile Vineyard has bold scents of violet, tar, cassis and dried herbs with touches of menthol, milk chocolate and graphite. The full-bodied palate is dense and rich with a grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing perfumed. Give it more time in bottle.
94 Pts Connoisseurs' Guide to CA Wines 93 Pts Wine Spectator Deeply structured and polished, featuring lively blueberry and cherry flavors, laced with smoked pepper and black licorice notes that build tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2030. — TF

Why This Wine ?
In the summer of 2000, I started looking for a Syrah vineyard that would speak to me. After a 2 1/2 hour drive and three gates later, I arrived at the 2010 ft. elevation Rockpile Vineyard. Between the subtle slopes, and the rocky soils, I knew this was and is still the place for great Syrah! I feel all wines have personalities. Thus due to the fact that my youngest daughter is a touch stubborn and hard headed, and Rockpile is full of very hard rocks, my daughter Haley's name has adorned this wine from day one. 2016 - 96 pts, 2015 - 95 pts, 2014 - 97 pts; 2013 - 96 pts, 95 pts; 2012 - 94 pts
