2017 Smoke & Mirrors
2017 Smoke & Mirrors
End of Vintage

A vibrant garnet / purple color, this wine continues to allow me to create a wine from all the vineyards that we work with and to make some magic a la Smoke & Mirrors. Black cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry with a touch of anise and chocolate covered maraschino cherries. The palate is full and sweet with flavors that echo the aromas.

The fruit in Smoke & Mirrors comes from all the vineyards I work with so it is a touch different each year.

The blend: 60% Zinfandel, 28% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah and 6% Grenache.

Why This Wine?

The goal is to produce wine that comes across like a fantastic Côtes du Rhône. I want complexity and intensity like all my other wines, but be more approachable.

As a lover of all things Rhône, I decided to make a Southern Côte du Rhône-style wine, but to include Zinfandel in the blend. I wanted it to be a great introduction to my Rhône-centric winemaking style. I also wanted it to be delicious and yes, MAGICAL! The name Smoke & Mirrors comes from my love of anything that is magic - Cirque du Soleil, The Harlem Globetrotters, etc.

Tasting Notes
91 Pts Wine Enthusiast Textured, powerful and velvety, this combines 60% Zinfandel with 28% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah and 6% Grenache. Aged in mostly concrete and large-format barrels, it is characterized by iron, garrigue and blueberry jam. 90 pts Jeb Dunnuck - Coming all from Sonoma County, the 2017 Smoke & Mirrors is always a good value, and this vintage is no exception. Lots of bright blueberry and plummy fruits give way to a medium-bodied, nicely textured wine that has plenty of peppery herbs and incense aromatics, good acidity, and a clean, lengthy finish. It doesn’t match the 2016, but it’s an outstanding, pleasure-bent effort that will evolve nicely for 7-8 years.
90 Pts Conn Guide Exhibiting the all of the winery's signature richness, this year's version of Smoke & Mirrors is rife with boysenberries and plums with plenty of sweet oak in support and is an intensely flavorful mélange of varieties that keys first and last on unrelenting, juicy fruit. It is fleshy and full with nicely fit tannins that allow for easy accessibility now, and it is a wine that delivers loads to like at a price that earns it a place among the better values to be had in full-throttle red-Rhône blends. "Winemaker Jeff Cohn releases a huge number of Zinfandels and interesting blends from throughout California. He also makes a handful of truly brilliant Syrahs that will compete with anything coming out of California today." ~ Jeb Dunnuck
