We have been making this wine since 2007. The original bud wood (Serine which is the oldest selections of Syrah) was brought over from one of my favorite vineyards in Cote Rôtie, Les Grandes Places. It has continued to produce some of the most incredible displays of the Rockpile Vineyard.
Just looking at the color of this dark opaque purple with hints of dark red on the rim, this wine has stupendous aromatics of cassis, roasted earth, savory tapenade, black cherry cola and just a touch of lavender and violet. On the palate this wine is compelling. Full-bodied and concentrated, but also showing pinpoint balance, elegance and intensity from the front palate to the mid palate to an astonishingly long finish.
Limited - 1 barrel produced. Will age effortlessly in the Cohn Zone: drink now - 2040.

I love Syrah from Côte-Rôtie, and one of my favorite vineyards is Les Grandes Places. So, when some budwood was made available to me from this vineyard, I jumped on it.
The oldest selections of Syrah in the Northern Rhône's Côte-Rôtie are known as Serine - they are not a clone. This selection of Serine has produced a wine that is a ménage à trois of aromas and flavors that one finds only in the elegance of Côte-Rôtie, the intensity of Hermitage, and the pure essence of the Rockpile Vineyard.
When you taste this wine next to my other Rockpile Syrahs, you will taste its magic. I feel this to be one of my most complex wines. As Serine is considered the oldest Syrah, the name So Serine came to be!
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Rockpile
Vineyard: Rockpile, sustainably farmed, vines planted in 1998
Planted at 2010-ft. elevation of granite, loam, clay, quartz, it's the heaviest, rockiest, and steepest vineyard at Rockpile. This elevation puts more stress on the vines producing thick-skinned and small berries. The granite adds a mineral backbone to the weight that the clay creates in the wine.

Vinification: 100% Syrah
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 100% new French oak barrels.

96+ Jeb Dunnuck — Coming from the Rockpile Vineyard in Sonoma, the 2017 Syrah So Serine is a primordial 2017 that sports a ruby/purple hue to go with awesome notes of blue fruits, smoked meat, graphite, violets, and a crushed rock-like sense of minerality. Beautifully concentrated, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it’s another magical wine from Cohn that’s going to benefit from at least 2-3 years of bottle age and evolve for 10-15 years or more.
Unfortunately, there’s a single barrel (25 cases) produced.
92 The Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — Deep ruby-purple, the 2017 Syrah So Serine offers cassis, violets, coffee and Luxardo cherries with notions of menthol and cedar. It's full-bodied and dense with a chewy frame and just enough freshness, finishing with some woody notes.
