2017 Sweetwater Springs Vineyard Zinfandel 'Isabel'
2017 Sweetwater Springs Vineyard Zinfandel 'Isabel'
End of Vintage - This wine is named after Jeff & Alexandra's daughter

Our daughter Isabel is vibrant with music as her guiding light. To me, this is what zinfandel is all about.

A vibrant, saturated cherry red color, with a perfumed aromas of dried cranberry/Bing cherries/wild raspberry, with wisps of salted licorice, and toasted black sesame seeds. The palate is seductively ripe round and supple, with flavors that echo its aromatics, but with the savory components as the lead that flows into a wine that showcases the intensity and richness that only this steep hillside can create.

Blend: 85% Zinfandel, 15% Sweetwater Springs Petite Sirah - vineyard sisters

Why This Wine?

One day in 2004, I received an urgent call from my good friend Ulises Valdez. He was incredibly excited about a new project he was going to start working on, in Russian River Valley and he wanted me to be part of it. So, he gave me the address, the two gate codes, and away I went.

To say this vineyard was amazing, is an understatement! This vineyard is incredibly steep, a 55° slope, and seriously rocky. The goal was to graft Zinfandel budwood from the famous St. Peter’s Church vineyard. It took just one look, and I was ready to sign the contract.

The Zinfandel I make from this vineyard has such a southern Rhône feel to it, one must taste it to understand. It reminds me how special Zinfandel can be when grown by those who share in the same passion.

Tasting Notes
95 Jeb Dunnuck - I loved the nose on the 2017 Zinfandel Sweetwater Springs Vineyard, a classic Zinfandel loaded with blue fruits, flowery incense, white pepper, and cedary spice aromas and flavors. Playing in the medium to full-bodied, elegant end of the spectrum, it has a seamless texture, light tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous Zinfandel from this vintage to drink over the coming 7-8 years. 92 Wine Advocate - Drink Date: 2020 - 2026 The 2017 Zinfandel Sweetwater Springs Isabel is a delicate, Pinot Noir-esque Zinfandel with a medium ruby color. It has a pretty perfume of peaches and tricolored berry fruits with accents of dusty earth and floral perfume. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded, soft and juicy with perfumed, nuanced flavors and a long, layered finish.
