This wine has an opaque purple, almost black color from the center of the wine to its rim. A sweet blackberry pie filling, black licorice, roasted earth notes and crème Brûlée. The palate has a fantastic entry, with a core of insanely rich fruit that becomes a black and blue fruit compote, with cassis, grilled meats and violet notes. As concentrated as this wine is, the sweet tannin backbone structure keeps the wine on a steady course.

It's an intriguing cool climate, Martinelli-owned and farmed vineyard. I have been friends with the family since 1993 and when they offered me a chance to make Syrah from this amazing vineyard. How could I say, "no"?
It's an incredible site. The rolling hills look like someone shook a giant rug; and it rippled out across the vineyard. Thus, you have warmer sections on the top wave and cooler ones on the bottom as it travels down the hillside. Magic!
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Russian River Valley
Vineyard: Zio Tony Ranch, organic, vines planted in 2000
Planted in 2000, the vineyard is named for the Martinelli's Uncle/Zio Tony who established the family's farm in the late 1800's originally planting potatoes on the current vineyard site. The Goldridge soils, clay, and loam produce a dusty earth component making the Syrah a little richer, rounder, and more seductive. It's trellised vines run along rolling hills in the vineyard.

The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 40% new French oak and 60% neutral French oak barrels.

94 Jeb Dunnuck — Lots of violets, flowery incense, blueberries, and peppery herbs emerge from the 2017 Syrah Zio Tony Ranch, a ripe, concentrated, medium to full-bodied Syrah that shines in the vintage. From a vineyard in the Russian River Valley, it has terrific purity of fruit, a solid mid-palate, and building, ripe tannins. Give it a few years.
92 Wine Enthusiast, Virginie Boone — Explosive in red fruit, earth, mushroom and gamy meat, this wine is textured in blue fruit, with a soft grip. Farmed by the Martinelli family, the site leaves you with specks of mineral-like crushed rock.
91 The Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — Deep ruby-purple, the 2017 Syrah Zio Tony Ranch has slowly opening scents of blackberry and black cherry jam, menthol, turned earth, violets and dried sage and thyme. It's full-bodied with well-managed fruits in a chewy texture and with just enough freshness on the finish. 244 cases were made. Drink now - 2030.
