2018 El Diablo Vineyard Grenache
2018 El Diablo Vineyard Grenache
The Fallen Angel - A Heritage, Sustainably Farmed Vineyard

A brilliant vermillion, gemstone stone color. Aromatics of strawberry rhubarb pie, cherry, wild raspberries, cranberry, cinnamon stick, white chocolate, Herbes de Provence and just a touch of sweet grapefruit, that makes smelling the aromas of this wine such an experience.

On the palate this wine is one step close to being over the top! Supple and full on the front palate, but with pinpoint precision on the midpalate that is loaded with black and red raspberries, lavender and just a touch of strawberries. This wine’s finish is long and steady and seems to go on and on, and on.

Why This Wine?

It's another amazing vineyard that Ulises Valdez planted and farmed. The original "suitcase" budwood came from the famed vineyards of Chateau Rayas in Chateaunuef du Pape. Ulises Valdez and I were able to bring this "suitcase" budwood from Rhône guru John Alban’s vineyard to the Russian River Valley, via connections in all the right places.

A cool climate site with just enough heat to produce a Grenache that is not only about finesse and elegance, but has enough backbone for aging. Each year when I make this wine, I am always amazed at the magic that happens after a year in the bottle. Patience is a virtue. I miss just sharing a glass or bottle or two with Ulises. This is the perfect site to stir one's emotions while drinking this wine.

Tasting Notes
93 - Lots of mulled strawberries, flowery incense, and ground pepper notes emerge from the 2018 Grenache El Diablo Vineyard, a medium-bodied, beautifully complex, lively Grenache that has silky tannins and no hard edges. It's well worth following over the coming 7-8 years, if not a decade.
Vineyard Notes
Sustainably Farmed Heritage Vineyard This vineyard is the perfect site for Grenache. It’s cool enough, warm enough, windy enough with perfect soils and a great grower Ulises Valdez. We have sourced from this 500ft. elevation vineyard since 2010. The clay loam adds depth and roundness to the wine while keeping an aspect of finesse to the overall balance.

Winemaker Notes
The Chateaunuef du Pape suitcase clone is unique in the size and intensity of the grapes. The budwood originates from Rhône guru John Alban’s vineyard.
