This vintage of Rossi zinfandel is a mystery novel, with twists and turns from the beginning aromatics to the last taste in the finish. The aromatics to this wine start with a savory aspect, that flow gently into the black cherry and raspberry coulis with just a hint of freshly cracked black peppercorns and tarragon.
The palate begins with a medium to full-bodied feel and builds by the midpalate, into a not just a very complex experience, but one that makes you ponders what’s going to happen next. Black and blue fruits with savory notes intermingle with a black licorice and a glycerol concentration, with just enough back bone to give it verve. The finish to this wine is one of my favorite aspects of tasting this wine. I find that’s its mineral and soft tannin structure keeps the suspense going.

Valentine Rossi’s Old Vine Zinfandel, incredible terroir, and the pioneering Phil Coturri farming it! That’s a winning glass! What I love about making Zinfandel from this site is that it reminds me of a sandy soil Châteauneuf-du-Pape and ones that are also in the galets (rocky) soils blended together. Thus, you have the elegance of one and intensity and richness of the other.
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.

The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 15% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 100% neutral French oak barrels.

94+ Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — The 2018 Zinfandel Rossi Ranch comes from more than 100-year-old vines farmed organically by Phil Coturri. It was made with 20% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 20% new French oak. Medium ruby, the nose has broody, dark fruits laced with graphite, iron, charcuterie and pipe tobacco accents. The palate is densely fruited but fresh, with a fine grain and mineral notes on the finish. Give it another couple of years in bottle.
94 Jeb Dunnuck — From a great vineyard in Sonoma and all varietal, the 2018 Zinfandel Rossi Ranch Vineyard reveals a dense ruby/plum hue to go with a rich, meaty bouquet of red and black plums, sandalwood, cigar wrapper, peppery herbs, and iron. Rich and beautifully textured, with building structure, this medium to full-bodied Zinfandel is going to drink brilliantly for a solid decade, if not longer.
