A dark garnet mahogany red color. Aromatics of graham cracker, Peking duck and hoisin sauce, black cherry, roasted earth, black currant, sweet pipe tobacco, lavender, black olive, and dark chocolate notes.
This wine takes me to the southern Rhône with its mineral aspects, wild Herbs de Provence, and lavender. Hoisin sauce and sweet black cherry and plum notes. Totally giving on the front palate, all the way to a finish that seems to just keep going and going.
The fruit in Smoke & Mirrors comes from all the vineyards I work with so it is a touch different each year. Perfect for pizza, roasted chicken, basically anything!
The blend: 46% Zinfandel, 26% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 6% Petite Sirah; 589 cases produced. In the Cohn Zone: drink now - 2028.

My ode to Côte du Rhône. The goal is to produce wine that comes across like a fantastic Côtes du Rhône. I want complexity and intensity like all my other wines, but be more approachable.
As a lover of all things Rhône, I decided to make a Southern Côte du Rhône-style wine, but to include Zinfandel in the blend. I wanted it to be a great introduction to my Rhône-centric winemaking style. I also wanted it to be delicious and yes, MAGICAL!
The name Smoke & Mirrors comes from my love of anything that is magic - Cirque du Soleil, The Harlem Globetrotters, etc.
Appellation: Sonoma County
Vineyard: Various vineyards, all in Sonoma County
Vinification: The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged for 12 months in 60% concrete 600 gallon tank, remainder neutral French oak barrels.

92 Jeb Dunnuck — Plums, blueberries, peppery herbs, and cedary spice notes all emerge from the 2018 Smoke & Mirrors, another charming, medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced wine in the lineup. It's already impossible to resist and there’s no need to delay gratification, although I see no reason it won't evolve for at least 4-6 years.
92 Wine Spectator, Tim Fish — Bold and plump, with fresh, multi-layered raspberry licorice and fruitcake spices that fan out on a plush finish. Zinfandel, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Petite Sirah. Drink now through 2028.
90 Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — The 2018 Smoke & Mirrors is made up of 60% Zinfandel, 28% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah and 6% Grenache, made with 40% whole cluster and aged in neutral oak and concrete. It has a medium ruby color with soft red and black fruits and notes of tar, earth and dried flowers. The full-bodied palate is firm and earthy with a spicy finish.
