A vibrant red/black/purple color.
A killer nose of black fruits, Asian five spice, a blend of strawberry/raspberry Twizzlers with just a touch of black licorice and a subtle dusting of freshly cracked white / green peppercorns. The best way to describe this wine is Rubenesque. Raspberry pie filing, in a warm cinnamon pie crust with a touch of cracked black peppercorns and sassafras. Elegance, finesse, and truly exotic best describes the way the wine fills your palate from beginning to the almost never-ending finish.

I have made 3 different Zinfandels using the terra cotta amphora. Each one different, but each one shows how using the porous amphora provides for a different texture, aromatics and flavors. It's like oak, it allows for some oxygen – it brings not only a richness to the wine, but an extra silkiness to its texture. It's also a neutral material like stainless steal and does not impart any additional flavors.
Aromatically, the wines always seem a touch brighter and more perfumed. I enjoy showing a different expression of a vineyard using different fermentation and aging vessels. I have made Orcio from the Cassata, Rinaldi, and Sweetwater Springs vineyards.
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Fiddletown, Amador County
Vineyard: Rinaldi, organic, replanted from its own heritage vines in 2000
This heritage vineyard was originally planted in the 1880's with Zinfandel and mixed blacks.
Vinification: 100% Zinfandel
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 20% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged in the terra cotta amphora.

95 Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — The 2019 Zinfandel Rinaldi Vineyard Orcio comes from vines 80-100 years old that are organically farmed and made with 20% whole cluster. The wine was aged exclusively in clay amphorae. It's a gorgeous, perfumed expression, with a medium ruby color and explosive scents of peach, wild berry jam, blood orange and bright lifts of purple flowers and tea leaves. The palate is seamless and silky, opening up to a kaleidoscope of flowers and berries. It finishes uplifted and perfumed.
93 Wine Enthusiast, Jim Gordon — This full-throttle and full-bodied wine coats the palate with gorgeous blackberry and boysenberry flavors. It's on the high side in terms of alcohol, but still smooth and just moderately tannic. Winemaker Jeff Cohn fermented the old-vine Zin grapes in a clay amphora using 20% whole clusters.
90 Audrey Frick for Jeb Dunnuck — The 2019 Zinfandel Orcio comes from the Rinaldi Vineyard in Amador County and I believe is 100% Zinfandel. It has a big, sweet nose of red plums, dried strawberries, cigar, toasted spices, and candied violets. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and balanced, with light tannins. It's a charming, satisfying, complex Zinfandel to enjoy over the coming 4-6 years.
