This wine has an opaque purple, almost black color from the center of the wine to its rim. A sweet blackberry pie filling, black licorice, roasted earth notes and crème Brûlée. The palate has a fantastic entry, with a core of insanely rich fruit that becomes a black and blue fruit compote, with cassis, grilled meats and violet notes. As concentrated as this wine is, the sweet tannin backbone structure keeps the wine on a steady course.
Why This Wine?
It's an intriguing cool climate, Martinelli-owned and farmed vineyard. I have been friends with the family since 1993 and when they offered me a chance to make Syrah from this amazing vineyard. How could I say, "No"?
It's an incredible site. The rolling hills look like someone shook a giant rug; and it rippled out across the vineyard. Thus, you have warmer sections on the top wave and cooler ones on the bottom as it travels down the hillside. Magic!
