Tasting Notes
As rich as this wine is, it stays very fresh and focused. Flavors and textures that remind me of a great Northern Rhône, with a killer mineral backbone.
93 Pts Wine Spectator "Plump and distinctive, offering structure and polish to the notes of ripe blueberry, fruitcake spices and licorice that sail along at a steady clip." Drink now through 2025. –TF
91 Pts Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate "As for the 2014 Zinfandel Iron Hill, this 100% Zinfandel with 10% whole clusters, aged in 30% new French oak. The wine is deep, briary, rich, supple, with loads of berry fruit, sweet tannins and a lush, heedy mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 5-7 years."
Vineyard Notes
Well stressed at a 55 degree slope with great iron exposure provides more red notes in the fruit. Selection: Cooke Farming techniques: Trellised Age of vines: 17 years Elevation: 400 ft Avg Temp: 50-85 degrees Avg Harvest Date: Mid to late-October Soils: Volcanic rock, slightly decomposed volcanic rock with iron; stressed at 55 degree slopes, more red notes Misc info: Cooke selection that comes from a nearby vineyard. It is planted in an amphitheater setting that produces a complex and expressive Northern Rhône like Zinfandel. There is a large lavender patch present that gives it big aromatics with red notes. Why we source here: No other vineyard like this, it’s like a Northern Rhône with a Zinfandel twist

Other Notes
90 Pts Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine "It is certainly marked by the winery's signature ripeness, yet this nicely focused, solidly structured effort pulls back from the brink and, while a fairly big Zinfandel in most every respect, it is one that relies first on vigorous, blackberry-like fruit. It is not free on heat and, like its companions, comes with plenty of tannic, back-palate grip, yet it nevertheless hints at a bit of sophistication, and we anticipate that it will find a somewhat more mannerly stance once a few years have passed."
