2017 Iron Hill Vineyard Zinfandel
2017 Iron Hill Vineyard Zinfandel
Organic Vineyard

Year in and year out this wine is the one that always mystifies me. I look at the luxurious black red color that looks like no other Zinfandel that I have ever had, and then one swirl and the aromas are just as mysterious as its color. In a blind tasting this wine always reminds me of what a potential blend of a Cote Rôtie and a Syrah from Chateauneuf du Pape would be if they were blended together.

This wine showcases black cherry, well-aged meats at a butcher shop, dark chocolate, cracked pepper, Australian black licorice and a touch of lavender. This wine is such a reflection of the 55° amphitheater designed vineyard that was planted in solid volcanic rock. To say its lush or unctuous on the palate, doesn’t do it justice. This wine is complete from aromatics to its pure decadent finish!

Why This Wine?

Terroir - this site is pure volcanic rock, a 55° slope vineyard planted in an amphitheater arrangement, with its big patch of lavender in the middle of the vines. All it takes is one look at this site and you know that something extraordinary will come from it. It's most Northern Rhone style Zinfandel I have ever tasted. It constantly amazes me every time I open a bottle, how beautiful this wine is and how as it ages gains layers and layers of complexity.

"Beautiful wine in fantastic shape!! Complex is an understatement. Cheers to you!🍷" - Adam E.

Tasting Notes
93+ Wine Advocate - Drink Date: 2020 - 2027 Deep ruby, the 2017 Zinfandel Iron Hill Vineyard embodies its title with notes of cast iron and iodine over a core of blackberry and cherry fruit with earthy accents. It's nuanced and concentrated, medium to full-bodied with a fine grain and super juicy, perfumed finish. This is a singular and intriguing Zinfandel. 93 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - From a vineyard I’m not familiar with, the 2017 Zinfandel Iron Hill Vineyard has a big, boisterous bouquet of blueberries, candied orange peel, mint, and funky herbs. This another rich yet elegant wine that’s a joy to drink.
93 Pts Wine Spectator Plump in personality and sinewy in structure, offering orange peel, fruitcake spice and wild berry flavors that build toward plush tannins. Drink now through 2029. — TF 90 Pts Connoisseurs' Guide to CA Wines
Vineyard Notes
Iron Hill Vineyard is organic and planted in an 55 degree amphitheater style setting whereby different parts of the vineyard get full sun exposure throughout the day. Large rosemary and lavender patches are planted around the vineyard and many large rock piles are scattered in and around the vines. From the top of the vineyard is a panoramic view of the town of Sonoma.
