A saturated earth red color that is reminiscent of the red soils up at 2000 ft elevation of Rockpile vineyard and a nose that’s all about place! Mineral, mineral, mineral - terroir at its essence. This is followed by a sweet cassis and black cherry, iron and a feeling that this wine is tightly wound and ready to explode from the glass.
The palate shows incredible richness, a tight structure, and then a sweetness that will not only mesmerize but will open your eyes to the magic that is Rockpile Vineyard.
This is a wine for the decanter or to drink 5-10 years from now.
Named for my youngest daughter, this wine comes from two different blocks. One produces the elegance and finesse and the other, the structure and depth of this wine. Together, they are the perfect balance. Intensely dark ruby red purple in color, it will stain the glass as you swirl it.
Aromas of black cherry, toasted brioche, white flowers, lavender, violets, savory notes of wild herbs and charcuterie. A mouth coating, classic Rockpile mineral structure and texture hits the front palate. Its focus on black cherry and hints of freshly crushed green and red peppercorns give way to a giving midpalate and long finish. A true reflection of my Haley’s personality.
It was important to me to make a special wine for my youngest daughter. She is an incredibly talented artist, incredibly smart, and loves adventure. She is also hardheaded and stubborn. She has a softer side and a harder side, so does this wine. One produces the elegance and finesse and the other, the structure and depth of this wine. Together, they are the perfect balance. Intensely dark ruby red purple in color, it will stain the glass as you swirl it. A true reflection of my Haley’s personality.
Vineyard: Rockpile, sustainably farmed, vines planted in 2000
Been making Rockpile Syrah since 2001. There is a magnetic force in this vineyard that pulls you in, and you feel that something amazing will be produced. These wines are as close to Hermitage Rouge as you will get.
Vinification: 100% Syrah, 172 cases produced.
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 80% new French oak and 20% neutral French oak barrels. Will age effortlessly in the Cohn Zone: drink now - 2040.
