2017 Rossi Ranch Zinfandel
2017 Rossi Ranch Zinfandel
A heritage, organic vineyard - farmed by legendary viticulturist Phil Cotturi - limit 3

Color that reminds me of an old time noir movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall —Dark Passage. Unquestionably a wine of enormous depth and richness. Blackberry / black cherry and a Raspberry coulis, soars from the glass, with just a touch of mineral that keeps the wine in check.

To use the word massive maybe over doing it a touch, but this wine is of enormous proportions. A combination of black and red fruits with a savory air-dried meat, a hint of dried tarragon and sweet concentrated palate that takes your senses for a ride. This wine just leaves me breathless and unable to conjure up more words to describe.

Originally planted in 1910, Rossi Ranch is steeped in Sonoma Valley history. In 2012, My friend Phil resurrect it's old vines in 2012 and today, together we make magic!

Why This Wine?

Valentine Rossi’s Old Vine Zinfandel, incredible terroir, and the pioneering Phil Coturri farming it! That’s a winning glass! What I love about making Zinfandel from this site is that it reminds me of a sandy soil Châteauneuf-du-Pape and ones that are also in the galets (rocky) soils blended together. Thus, you have the elegance of one and intensity and richness of the other.

Tasting Notes
95 pts Jeb Dunnuck - From a great vineyard in Sonoma County, the 2017 Rossi Ranch Vineyard is another perfumed, complex wine from Cohn that has lots of spicy, floral, orange blossom and violet notes to go with a core of exotic blue fruits. Medium-bodied and incredibly polished on the palate, with great tannins and a seamless texture, this wine has loads of richness and depth, yet still just glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness. This was a challenging vintage for Zinfandel, as it ripened at the same time as the heatwave, yet this is seriously impressive. Hats off to Mr. Cohn for a stunning wine. 93 pts Wine Advocate - Drink Date: 2020 - 2026 Medium ruby, the 2017 Zinfandel Rossi Ranch has a rich perfume of stone fruits and berry jam with notes of cinnamon, autumn leaves and floral perfume. The medium to full-bodied palate has well-tempered fruitiness with a pleasant chew, good freshness and a long finish with just a touch of warmth.
