PROFOUND is the best way to describe this deeply colored wine that comes from the coolest of sites on the estate vineyard of the Valdez family. Vibrant and fresh, smelling this wine reminds me of walking through a patch of wild herbs and brush in the South of France. Then the black / red raspberry notes intermingle with blackberry/cassis, a touch of Worchestershire and soy sauce notes and reminds me of the Northern Rhône.
The use of 60% whole cluster this year brought out an exoticness to the palate. Full-bodied and rich, this wine is a multi-layered experience. Sweet black fruits, grilled meats, roasted herbs and a glycerol feel to this palate makes the wine so easy to enjoy now, but trust me, it has the structure for the ages.

My brother from another mother, Ulises Valdez planted this vineyard with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also with two very special selections of Syrah (shhh, BIG secret!). It is, without a doubt, the coolest site of any of the Syrahs that I make, and that is what intrigued me to do it. And, Ulises was a great viticulturist. This vineyard has a feel to it that just draws you in.
I knew that the wines from here would have a savory component to it, so I felt let’s turn it up a notch to 60% whole cluster to make it even more savory, more explosive!
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.

Vineyard: Silver Eagle, organic, planted in 2006
Vinification: 100% Syrah
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 60% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak and 60% neutral French oak barrels.

93+ Jeb Dunnuck — Coming from the Russian River Valley, the 2017 Syrah Silver Eagle Vineyard is terrific, showing lots of plum and blackberry fruits, notes of peppery herbs, game, violets, and scorched earth, full-bodied richness, and ripe, present tannins. It needs a year to integrate some tannins but has the palate to evolve for 10-12 years.
92 The Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks —The 2017 Syrah Silver Eagle Vineyard has an inky color and aromas of cassis with notes of tar, potting soil, dried thyme and floral perfume. The full-bodied palate is powerful and chalky but a bit mute at this stage, with just enough freshness on the finish. Give it more time in bottle.
