2018 Iron Hill Vineyard Zinfandel
2018 Iron Hill Vineyard Zinfandel
Organic Vineyard - Exclusive Producer

Once again, this wine always takes me to the Northern Rhône Valley and totally mystifies me. The color is a dark black cherry red. The aromatic of black cherries covered in dark chocolate permeate from the glass, followed by lavender, air-dried beef and yes, a touch of iron (no kidding).

A medium-full palate, that has incredible focus and minerality that gives this wine its backbone. Loaded with dried black cherries, black currants and Valrhona Guanaja dark chocolate, and with that ever-present lavender and loamy notes make this a Zin like no other.

Why This Wine?

Terroir - this site is pure volcanic rock, a 55° slope vineyard planted in an amphitheater-style arrangement, with a big patch of lavender in the middle of the vines. There are more large rosemary and lavender patches planted around the vineyard in the many rock piles that are scattered in and around the rows. I am the sole producer from this fascinating vineyard.

Different parts of the vineyard get full sun exposure throughout the day. All it takes is one look at this site and you know that something extraordinary will come from it. It's the most Northern Rhône style Zinfandel I have ever tasted. It constantly amazes me every time I open a bottle, how beautiful this wine is and how as it ages gains layers and layers of complexity.

I look at the luxurious black red color that looks like no other Zinfandel that I have ever had, and then one swirl and the aromas are just as mysterious as its color. In a blind tasting this wine always reminds me of what a potential blend of a Cote Rôtie and a Syrah from Chateauneuf du Pape would be if they were blended together.

"Beautiful wine in fantastic shape!! Complex is an understatement. Cheers to you!🍷" - Adam E.

Pro Reviews
94+ Wine Advocate - The 2018 Zinfandel Iron Hill Vineyard was made with 20% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 25% new French oak. Medium ruby, the nose is scented with peach, raspberry, rhubarb, aniseed and purple flowers. The palate is full, grainy and fresh with a wonderful array of spices that fans out on the long finish. 93+ Jeb Dunnuck - The 2018 Zinfandel Iron Hill Vineyard reminds me of a top Châteauneuf with its red and black fruits, peppery herbs, violets, and herbes de Provence-like aromas and flavors. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine shows more classic Zinfandel cigar and cedary notes as well as medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet firm tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. This is another impeccably made, satisfying, age-worthy beauty from the talented Jeff Cohn! Give it a few years and enjoy over the following decade.
