2018 Orcio Sweetwater Vineyard Zinfandel
2018 Orcio Sweetwater Vineyard Zinfandel
Limited - A Landy sustainably farmed vineyard

A dark ruby, almost black cherry color with a concentrated nose of blackberry, olive, cinnamon stick, clay pot, freshly cracked white peppercorn and white flowers. Exotic on the front palate with a black forest flavor profile that flows into a full-bodied midpalate that highlights more peppery / savory notes into a lengthy finish. As sensual as a Zinfandel can be.

Why This Wine?

I have made 3 different Zinfandels using the terra cotta amphora. Each one different, but each one shows how using the porous amphora provides for a different texture, aromatics and flavors. It's like oak, it allows for some oxygen – it brings not only a richness to the wine, but an extra silkiness to its texture. It's also a neutral material like stainless steal and does not impart any additional flavors.

Aromatically, the wines always seem a touch brighter and more perfumed. I enjoy showing a different expression of a vineyard using different fermentation and aging vessels. I have made Orcio from the Cassata, Sweetwater Springs, and Rinaldi vineyards.

Tasting Notes
93 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - Coming all from the Sweetwater Springs Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, the 2018 Zinfandel Orcio boasts a deep purple color as well as classic Zinfandel notes of spiced plums, mulled strawberries, flowers, licorice, and incense. Medium to full-bodied, with beautiful purity of fruit as well as elegance on the palate, give this charming, elegant Zinfandel another year or two in bottle and enjoy through 2030. 92 pts Wine Advocate - The 2018 Zinfandel Sweetwater Springs Orcio is a bit muted at this stage, offering touches of orange peel and potpourri over red and black fruits. The medium to full-bodied palate is restrained and perfumed in the mouth with a surprisingly soft frame and long, juicy finish.

Winemaker Notes
The use of the amphora provides for a different texture, aromatics and flavors then the barrel aged version. Both are great expressions of terrior.
