“Some fly, he soared!” This quote is a special tribute to my friend Ulises Valdez. This Syrah comes from his family’s estate vineyard, and it truly is the tribute to his skills and magic as a viticulturist.
An exotic, black cherry/ dark purple color, that entices you to the mind-blowing aromatics that have more twists to it than a great mystery novel. Black cherry pie filling, roasted herbs and fennel seed, dried meats with a touch of freshly crushed red and black peppercorns, with a subtle dusty component that is so Silver Eagle Vineyard. Explosive forward palate that has my jaw dropping each time I taste it. The mid-palate is loaded with all kinds of savory components that weave in and out of the black cherry, iron, and baking spices and take you to a never-ending finish.

My brother from another mother, Ulises Valdez planted this vineyard with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also with two very special selections of Syrah (shhh, BIG secret!). It is, without a doubt, the coolest site of any of the Syrahs that I make, and that is what intrigued me to do it. And, Ulises was a great viticulturist. This vineyard has a feel to it that just draws you in.
I knew that the wines from here would have a savory component to it, so I felt let’s turn it up a notch to 60% whole cluster to make it even more savory, more explosive!
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Russian River Valley
Vineyard: Silver Eagle, organic, planted in 2006
Vinification: 100% Syrah
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 60% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak and 60% neutral French oak barrels.

97 Jeb Dunnuck — From the Russian River, the 2018 Syrah Silver Eagle Vineyard is another rich, powerful wine from Cohn that stays graceful and balanced. Lots of smoked black and blue fruits, cured meats, graphite, and spice notes all soar from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, with a killer mid-palate, lots of ripe, polished tannins, and a great, great finish. Drink this Hermitage look-alike over the coming 10-15 years.
94+ Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — The 2018 Syrah Silver Eagle Vineyard was made with 60% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak. It has a deep ruby color and explosive scents of cracked pepper, blackcurrant, dried thyme and chargrill. The full-bodied palate is rounded and fresh with a long finish, but it feels youthfully wound and may improve with more bottle time.
93 Connoisseurs' Guide to CA Wine — This one is a touch juicier and sweeter in tone with a certain bent to fruity decadence and a fleshy, slightly polished palatal feel that is likely o tempt earlier drinking than most. But, its relatively wide-open richness noted, it is still a full, finely structured wine that is some years away from reaching its top form, and we would lobby for no fewer than three or four more before bringing it to the table. And, while there is nothing restrained about it, it may well, in the long run, prove to be one of the more refined of the lot, if not the most powerful.
