A dark black cherry/purple color. Tantalizing aromatics of blackberry, freshly roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, cinnamon and Herbes de Provence. The palate is surprisingly elegant for a wine of such richness. It reminds me of a combination of Hermitage and Cote Rôtie if one could make that blend.
The palate has a soft roundness to the entry with ripe tannins through the sweet mid-palate and just enough minerality to carry through to the finish. The wine is a collection of flavors ranging from roasted meats with a peppercorn crust on a roast beef, fennel salumi that keeps this wine going in so many directions, but so focused at the same time.

It's an intriguing cool climate, Martinelli-owned and farmed vineyard. I have been friends with the family since 1993 and when they offered me a chance to make Syrah from this amazing vineyard. How could I say, "no"?
It's an incredible site. The rolling hills look like someone shook a giant rug; and it rippled out across the vineyard. Thus, you have warmer sections on the top wave and cooler ones on the bottom as it travels down the hillside. Magic!
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Russian River Valley
Vineyard: Zio Tony Ranch, organic, vines planted in 2000
Planted in 2000, the vineyard is named for the Martinelli's Uncle/Zio Tony who established the family's farm in the late 1800's originally planting potatoes on the current vineyard site. The Goldridge soils, clay, and loam produce a dusty earth component making the Syrah a little richer, rounder, and more seductive. It's trellised vines run along rolling hills in the vineyard.

The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 40% new French oak and 60% neutral French oak barrels.

94+ Jeb Dunnuck — I loved the nose on the 2018 Syrah Zio Tony Ranch, and it's just pure Syrah goodness with its ripe blackberry fruits as well as pepper, game, olive, and violet aromas and flavors. More medium-bodied on the palate, it has a solid sense of freshness and purity, building structure, and a great finish. It will benefit from a year or three and keep for a solid decade.
94+ The Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — The 2018 Syrah Zio Tony Ranch was made with 40% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, it has gregarious blackcurrants, cracked pepper, pencil shavings, char and gentle thyme hints on the nose. The palate is full-bodied, grainy and classically styled with minerally fruits and a long, floral-laced finish.
